Phantogram, St. Lucia and Bonnie Raitt lead the week’s big shows
Phantogram
Bishop Briggs, Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type
Raise your hand if you hear Phantogram’s “Handful of Diamonds” and are instantly transported back to days spent on dingy couches at strange parties with cheap wine and cheaper booze served without mixers. That was one of the biggest tracks of 2009, back when wearing vintage outfits could still be considered kitschy by mainstream sartorialists. But New York dream-pop duo Sarah Barthel and Josh Carter have made vast strides since the indie days of the late aughts, and their latest single — “You Don’t Get Me High Anymore,” a catchy exercise of moody synths and sludgy beats — gives them a dark edge that promises great returns when the band performs at the Midland for the Buzz Halloweenie Roast on Friday. Up-and-coming pop singer-songwriter Bishop Briggs is also on deck, with local group Rachel Mallin & the Wild Type opening.
7:30 p.m., Friday, October 14, at the Midland, 1228 Main
St. Lucia
BAIO
Jean-Philip Groblerm wants you to celebrate. That much is clear on Matter, the latest from his band, St. Lucia. It’s a glitzy album full of ecstatic trills and Super Mario Kart–worthy sonic effects, and Groblerm’s voice does not rest once in the entire sequence. There’s no keeping him down, as he cheerfully threatens to never stop until it’s broken in “Dancing on Glass.” When you party with St. Lucia, he seems to say, the party never stops. Christopher Baio — whom you might recall as the bassist for Vampire Weekend — opens the show, promoting his excellent solo album, the Names. If it’s a night of youthful pop with vague wafts of early ’90s synth haze you want, look no further than this bill on Saturday at Liberty Hall.
7 p.m. Saturday, October 15, at Liberty Hall, 644 Massachusetts St., Lawrence
Bonnie Raitt
Bonnie Raitt has been a name brand for 45 years. Nearly half a century, you guys — that’s how long we’ve had the timeless magic of this woman’s warm, blues-spiked rasp. She’s got close to a dozen Grammy Awards and twice as many nominations. She’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. And if you had any doubts about her legacy, Raitt’s latest album — Dig In Deep, her 20th — should clear them right up. It’s a hearty, hard-hitting collection, on which 66-year-old Raitt delivers a peak performance. The album was recorded with her longtime touring band, featuring bassist James “Hutch” Hutchinson, drummer Ricky Fataar, guitarist George Marinelli and keyboardist Mike Finnigan; the whole crew will be behind her at the Midland on Wednesday. What a way to spend a weeknight.
8 p.m. Wednesday, October 19, at the Midland, 1228 Main
