Party Like You’re 200 Years Old

February 12, 2009 marks the 200th anniversary of the birth of the great naturalist Charles Darwin. This free event is open to the public. It will include birthday cake; a 1st edition copy of the Origin of Species and The Voyage of the Beagle will be on display as well as several other Darwin-related books the Library’s History of Science collection; and, a power point presentation Celebrating Charles Darwin. Following the party guests may attend the One Book discussion of Darwin’s Origin of Species: A Biography by well-respected Darwinian scholar, Janet Browne, at 6 pm in the Library’s auditorium.
This event kicks off the Library’s celebration of the 150th anniversary of Darwin’s seminal work, The Origin of Species, which was first published in November 1859 and has not been out of print since. This work, of which the Library has a first edition, proposed the theory of evolution and natural selection. Even after 150 years, it remains controversial and subject to often-heated debates.
