Parents of child who lost fingers in ferret attack say they’re broke

The story of the parents whose child lost seven fingers in a ferret attack has taken another odd turn. In January, Ryan and Carrie Waldo’s 4-month-old baby girl had seven fingers chewed off (leaving only the thumbs and part of a pinkie) by the family pet in Grain Valley. The parents told police that they had fallen asleep and awoke when the girl screamed in pain. Cellphone records later showed that the parents were texting from different locations the evening of the attack, casting doubt on their version of events. In June, the parents were charged with first-degree child endangerment. Both pleaded not guilty.
In November, the Waldos missed a pretrial hearing, which prompted arrest warrants to be issued for them. An attorney representing Ryan Waldo told the court that public judgment of the couple has been harsh, and they are too broke to afford representation, according to KCTV Channel 5 News.
Dan Miller told a judge that he’s working for Ryan Waldo on a pro bono basis, and that both parents have lost their jobs in the fallout of the accusations.
