Pap of Tap

Gregory Hines earned his street cred on various platforms — singing a duet with Luther Vandross and appearing in Waiting to Exhale, for example — but it was his dancing that first drew attention. Thank You, Gregory, a Tribute to the Legends of Tap honors Hines’ moves as well as those of Fred Astaire, Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, Ruby Keeler, Juanita Pitts and others. The show starts at 8 p.m. in Yardley Hall at Johnson County Community College’s Carlsen Center (12345 College Boulevard in Overland Park, 913-469-4445). Expect live performances from eight expert hoofers and a jazz pianist while multimedia projections and film excerpts highlight the rhythm and romance of tap. Local dancer Lonnie McFadden, half of the McFadden Brothers, leads a talk at 7 p.m., and audience members can stay after the performance for a discussion with a dance-company member. Tickets cost $25 and $35. For more information, see jccc.edu/theseries.
