Happy (Belated and R.I.P.) Birthday, Etta “At Last” James, January 25, 2012. You would have been 74 years old. Let your Aquarian Freak Flag fly. (Is that redundant?)

As with ALL Aquarians, you cannot look to a frugally produced Asian calendar at a neighborhood eatery and then think you know your Chinese animal. Ms. Etta, although an Aquarian, was born in the prior year of the Earth Ox (must talk to someone who can look up a lunar calendar or a New Moon in Aquarius). Etta was not born the year of the Earth Tiger. This particular regal title belongs to Ms. Turner, born in November of 1938, and those born after February 1, 1938.

Some knowing souls party for nine days, from January 23 through February 1. One of this year’s mottos: Instead of focusing on what you do NOT have, focus on what you have AND, more importantly, what has been done for you, please.

Astrological note: Know that one of the most challenging times occurs close to June 24 when Pluto (transformation) and Uranus (shocks) square off in Capricorn and Aries. Use the philosophy of the Chinese I Ching to make your deeper decisions. Your yearly verse is as follows …

AIR

Aquarius/Aquarius Rising*(Jan 20-Feb 19): Dragon’s wind can be thought of as gentle yet penetrating. Your 2012 philosophical verse is 20 aka Kuan or Contemplating. A language of symbols, and this verse is chock-full of them, a temple, watchtower and your inner self contemplating the meaning of life. Realize that you’ll sense the future (as you normally do), however, through having a daily spiritual practice (some kind of decompressing, downtime). You can logically access a tempered future, not an apocalyptic one. So when there’s a crisis in or of your community, stop and think, refusing to indulge feelings from the past that are clouding your precise judgment in the present. There’s treating your body like a temple. Your sexual energies (which include creativity) awaken throughout this next six weeks. Repress this drive at your peril. Instead, use your verse to guide you into being the well-received adviser to a circle of people who need your balanced vision of what we can be to each other once we drop our attachment to our outer masks and possessions. After all, Kuan Yin is a bodhisattva (a being that forgos Nirvana, a Buddhist heaven, until all beings get enlightenment); therefore, you know you can help with a bit of otherworldly perspective, based on what can logically be done in the present. Continued in another social-networking air sign of Gemini …

Gemini/Gemini Rising* (May 21-Jun 20): Begun in Aquarius. As one of the three air signs, you, Aquarius and Libra are here to play the roles of mediators. The spring of 2012 will need many members of your observing tribe. Verse 59 or Dispersion speaks of the social responsibility of artists. With creativity and a unique vision, artists are charged with the response-ability to reunite us with reality. Dispersion also can indicate that when you are bending to your breaking point, you imagine yourself separating your egocentric attachments as if you were a butcher cutting meat from a bone. You perceive the knife and the meat in harmony. We need your ability to reframe potentially conflicting issues. Through this reframing, some get to save face while others get more light shown onto them and their motives. Use your fact-gathering nature to share and distribute truth, as distinguished from wishful thinking. Continued in the initiating social-networking air sign of Libra …

Libra/Libra Rising* (Sep 23-Oct 22): Begun in Aquarius. Yours and the other Venus-ruled sign (Taurus) share an excellent philosophical verse. It is called “Insight” or “Inner Truth.” The wind of the dragon moves briskly over your I Ching the lake. These breezes move even the most stubborn individuals. You possess better luck at persuading us to take the higher ground. As one original text states, “An enlightened person, therefore, negotiates in disputes and moderates rigid ideas.” But what happens when you are the one with the rigid ideas? You will not, I repeat, enjoy the spring lest you become mentally open and flexible. Resist the temptation to argue with your “relative” mental adaptability. You excel at discussing where we become hard to manage, but look into your own mirror and true insight (and being heard more clearly by us) will flourish. After the mental observation and creation of new ways to relate, enter in the soulful, unity-seeking water signs.

WATER

The late Cancerian Phoebe Show haunts us beautifully from one of the other worlds humming “Poetry Man,” “Something Real” or “Something So Right.”

Pisces/Pisces Rising (Feb 18-Mar 20): Read at least the last line of Libra. Each water sign follows an air one. The mind (air) separates and categorizes, but it must have unifying themes or it will destroy life as we know it. That’s where the water signs make the top grades, empathically knowing what obsessive thoughts drove Humpty Dumpty over the wall. 2012’s philosophical verse is Benefit/Increase, 42. When challenged to leave a part of a mixed feeling you’re still studying, access this original interpretation: “Because of the intensity of the benevolent forces surrounding you, you are presented with an excellent opportunity for self-improvement.” In my belief structure, you are your own benefactor (as well as judge and jury). The closer to June 24, 2012, the more you will be led to operate from what the Chinese say of this verse: “To rule is to serve.” Locate a benevolent and inspirational force with real-world experience, analyze alleged experience (words matching deeds), then imitate. Continued in soul-sourcing Cancer …

Cancer/Cancer Rising* (Jun 21-July 21): Flowed over from Pisces, which you need to read first. Benevolent forces sound lofty; they feel lofty. Yet, it is simple. A WWJD? Pondering on What Would Jesus Do? Or WWBD? What Would Buddha Do? Like a text title categorically states, “If You Meet Buddha on a Road, Kill Him.” You are (or can be) an embodiment of these legendary beings. Your guiding verse of 2012 from the I Ching is 9. It is called Restrained or the Taming Power of the Small. This hexagram (verse) contains one of my favorite translations: “dense clouds but no rain.” A small improvement only over what is considered to be pointedly unfulfilling. Remember, family-oriented love bucket, you cannot contain everyone’s feelings any more than a bucket can hold the ocean. Seek to hold the essential intent of those you love. The more that satisfaction seeps from you, the less you’ll know what to do. When you do not know, do nothing, and especially do no doubt. Those dense clouds are your mind’s doubt. Ooze on over into Scorpio …

Scorpio/Scorpio Rising* (Oct 23-Nov 21): Pisces started your three-part message. Conflicting soulful sign, that’s you. You’d be like those of us who take the smoked pork hocks out of our soul food to make them healthier. (I add smoked turkey tails and use no salt.) Anyway, you can put your soul on a deep freeze. And 2012 is no exception. With your heat-expanding ruler, Mars, in earthy Virgo, you have an incredible verse from the I Ching to balance out any overly domineering actions. Your guiding philosophical star is 37, called the Family. One interpretation simply states, “There is an advantage in correct persistence such as that of a woman. An enlightened person, therefore, has substance in his words and endurance in his behavior.” It does not say that you have to be a woman. Follow your more submissive urges, no matter if your genitalia is an “outie” or “innie.” The largest sex organ (brain) understands that it is the perception of how to make your relationships more passionate through more unity. Utilize your brain to decide whom you’d want to follow. Unfreeze your thoughts about how connections should go. Your only obligation is to behave as if you know what support we need, and then decide how much to give, persistently. After we are well-versed in the matters of the soul, our spirits then seek to soar in the fire signs that follow …

FIRE

Like Aries Al Green’s classic tunes “I’m Still in Love With You” and “Let’s Stay Together,” we are still counting our fortunate life through the fire signs.

Aries/Aries Rising* (Mar 21-Apr 19): Each fire sign begins a new orientation. Yours is the personal (egocentric one). You want something altered in your life? It will be up to you to change it. When met with one obstacle after another, the ancient wisdom of the Chinese through the I Ching gives you verse 37, the Family. As a masculine fire sign, you thrive on action and making a mark. The original interpretation of submissiveness must be altered to fit your brand of taking charge. I submit (pun intended) that you listen to the 30-plus-year-old disco joint “We Are Family.” Little did we know, the four sisters known as Sister Sledge had decided before recording their biggest selling album that if this one didn’t work, they would stop singing professionally. The point is to have faith and things you do/you won’t go wrong/this is our family jewel. Chopin, it ain’t. But having the family jewels (pun intended) to submit to a vision of a group, family or tribe makes 2012 a prosperous year for you beyond what you can create all by yourself. Blazing more trails through Leo …

Leo/Leo Rising* (July 22-Aug 22): Got the party started in Aries. You begin the interpersonal orientation. Learning to leap into a romance, love affair or hell, agreeing to a first date takes some moxie, some real spirit. Your very real affirming phrase “I will” pushes you to another level along with your philosophical verse 57, the Gentle or Penetrating Influence. You cannot use your concentrated heat on one spot for too long, lest we burn. That’s why the compatible Dragon reminds you to be gentle, subtle like the sun rays peering out from behind a mostly cloudy day. A major translation from Chinese to English states, “In the life of the community, it is the powerful (I will) influence of a great personality (you) that uncovers (shades of your fixed, hidden energy) and breaks up those intrigues which shun the light of day (hello, Sun-ruled). This year you will be called to be a central manager of bringing disparate folks together (that can be your mate and children or two hardheaded friends). On an inward level, you have the insight to see beyond what others want to hide (you’ll seem like an honorary Scorpio). The spirit of inner sight will be helped through Sagittarius …

Sagittarius/Sagittarius Rising* (Nov 22-Dec 19): Your fire-sign message sparks in Aries. Start there. You see, happy-go-lucky Sagittarius, you can only stay happy and lucky when you act simply and directly. Aries teaches you this behavior. And so does the I Ching through verse 42. Benefit/Increase suits you extremely well this Dragon year. You do well when life gets exotic and refuses to fit into well-formed boxes. A Dragon year is nothing if not exotic, even quixotic. Use Richard Wilhelm translation to underscore how to troubleshoot and synthesize the unusual cultural elements sure to find you in 2012: “A sacrifice of the higher element (your fire sign begins the transpersonal or communal orientation) that produces an increase of the lower is called an out-and-out increase; it indicates the spirit that alone has power to help the world.” That’s when your happy moves joyously into lucky and produces an exceptionally balanced inspirational voice and vision. Vision means little if it is not manifested or earthed. The next stage after sight is grounding, and here march the earth signs …

EARTH

I dedicate the earth signs of 2012 to Virgo Amy Winehouse. “Our Day Will Come” is a smoking reggae track on her posthumous CD.

Taurus/Taurus Rising* (Apr 20-May 21): Hello, the police person of the zodiac. We look to you, Virgo and Capricorn to remind us of the limitations of the physical world. Philosophically speaking, the I Ching gives you a ballast upon which to balance through verse 61, Inner Truth or Insight. Choosing what and who nourishes you gives you an ability to see how the invisible affects the visible means of how we connect. Huh? Wilhelm’s original text states that “a heart free of prejudices and therefore open to truth.” Like your sister sibling sign that’s Venus-ruled, Libra, you have to use your insights to move the stuck folks. However, you are likely to be the immovable object attracting the immovable force. In essence, June 24, 2012, and the six or so weeks surrounding it will require – no, demand – a diligent adaptability on your part. Not from an unflappable or detached motive (showing how strong and logical and pragmatic you are), but from a receptivity to what the rest of us need from you but have learned to do without or, worst, not even ask from you. Yes, you can be amazingly self-centered to a point that your Insight only is such when working retroactively. Let purely scrumptious Virgo’s message give you some healing …

Virgo/Virgo Rising* (Aug 22-Sept 22): Your message begins in Taurus. Water as an element in both systems (Western and Chinese) is extremely creative, interactive and cleansing. And Dragons accentuate the colorful and bizarre. You live on the intersection of rare and conventional. In your virginal mode, you are rare. In your wage slavery side (or sex worker imagination), you are conventional, selling yourself for the highest bidder. Your North Star that illuminates your path out of organized religious thought is I Ching verse 59, Reuniting/Dissolution. Imagine your worst problems can be moved toward solving when you realize the metaphor of wind (Dragon) blowing over water (Virgo within the Chinese system), dissolving it into foam and mist. Wilhelm’s original text states that “gentleness serves to break up and dissolve the breakage.” In its highest and purest form, religious forces are supposed to help us overcome dividing egotism (be they of the confederate or martial variety). The problem is that Dragon years seek to break up anything that disunites or separates us on a petty, earthly level. Continued in executive Capricorn …

Capricorn/Capricorn Rising* (Dec 21-Jan 19): Your message begins in Taurus. This Water Dragon Year has some exceptional protection for you. You have gargoyles and undines and fairies and pixies and sprites. It would be a Dragon Year that the Mayans would have simply stopped counting. These ancient folks came to 2012 and ceased their math. Allow the unusual to come into stark focus, but do not allow fear to weigh you down. Summer’s beginning requires that you mediate completely upon your I Ching verse which is 53, Development. The symbol is a tree growing upon a mountain. You be the mountain, open, sturdy and allowing any type of vegetation to grow, if it can. Expect 2012 to have its drama, but you learn to call upon your invisible helpers to guide you. Your philosophical direction shows itself through your taking the tried-and-true path until your community or family needs you to take a calculated risk and think outside the box.
