Out of Time & Space Astrology

R.I.P. Whitney Houston. Your signature tune belongs to everyone (written by Capricorn Dolly Parton and found for you to sing by Capricorn Kevin Costner for the 1992 movie The Bodyguard). So I have given no one sign your signature song, “I Will Always Love You,” because it belongs to all signs. (We all love love.) Your voice brought inspiration and joy to millions. (Read Leo and Libra.)
Aquarius/Aquarius Rising* (Jan 20-Feb 19): A moment in the soul can last forever … is one of my favorite lines to the song “Didn’t We Almost Have It All?” In your mind’s eye, you can perceive what makes life worth living, a little bit of ass mixed with some social justice and zany, experimental friends (the more diverse, the more better). Of course, I could have gone with Ms. Houston’s standard that we will miss, something about always loving someone, but knowing you, how I know you, you’d want a song distinct from what everyone else is using. Having it all requires a conscious analysis of what “it” is. Secretly, masochistic fantasies can haunt your otherwise confident self. Truly, I say to you, get safe words and discuss limits before you begin this kind of play. And, as the song goes, the ride with you was worth the fall, my friend/Didn’t we almost have it all? All aboard the soul train (R.I.P. Don Cornelius, too) where you get to act as the conductor, too.
Pisces/Pisces Rising (Feb 18-Mar 20): Although Ms. Houston was a Leo, she was born with the sign of Pisces rising. So, she looks like you are. Teaching note: Unless you were born at or near sunrise, you have a different sign on the eastern horizon. Your sign has a strong pull toward the unity and bliss experienced while in your mother’s womb. It’s a hard-knock life being human and separated from source. Think of how many different looks Whitney could easily pull off? That’s your chameleon self operating with a blazing Leo performer. Are you living your life from an educated and edified soul? If not, you are even more susceptible to addictions of all kinds. You escape the rigors of the physical world in direct proportion to your lack of acceptance of who you really are. Self-affirming Mars gives you the courage to fight to be you within the context of all your closest relationships. Cease being the fake you, who plays to what you believe to be our expectations, but the real you. Like I believe children are our future alluding to “The Greatest Love of All,” I know your future brightens with brutal self-honesty regarding your desires, even when circumstances will not allow you to act upon them.
Aries/Aries Rising* (Mar 21-Apr 19): I wanna dance with somebody/I wanna feel the heat with somebody, sure, it’s one of Whitney’s ditties. But it fits so well with your nature. Born under an Aries Moon, she had warrior and pioneer instincts, along with a deep need to be liked. Like you, whether we like you or not, we tend to overlook your tantrums and vainglorious behaviors because usually they are not premeditated, just reactions in the moments. Softening your usual responses is none other that lovely Venus moving through your sign until March 5. You have excellent planetary support to get your way and make us like your brand of hot intensity. Please just remember our name and love us tomorrow. It is your heat that is so damn attractive!
Taurus/Taurus Rising* (Apr 20-May 21): Like Aries, you want to be dancing with somebody and you have heat, but you can be the slow build of her first two hits: “You Give Good Love” and “Saving All My Love for You.” Unless you are the wounded sort of bull or cow, you do not give up the goodies too quickly. And you like it simple and sweet, so you give good love through a mandate to never rush. You’ve been known to starve yourself if it is a certain item you want from your restaurant (a.k.a. your lover). However, planetary energies these days make you behave more like the hare than the tortoise. Use this weekend to get to know any new folks better before you commit more fully. Although it could be problematic, if you live out the lyric to “Saving All My Love for You,” which tells the story of a romantic triangle. Unless you have some Gemini or Pisces, you do not perform well as a third party or third wheel. You’re either all in on being with one person or you’re looking around for some good love that girls (and boys) like you dream of …

Gemini/Gemini Rising* (May 21-Jun 20): Your journalistic self would ask, “Where do broken hearts go?” Or where they at? Behind the preposition is what I’d tell you. You tend toward mental pursuits; therefore, you’d intellectualize the feeling aspect of a heart wounded or broken. Can they find their way home? It is an obsession on what is missing from the relationships. Finding your way home through being a couple means you focus on what’s there. Leave the complaining, nagging and whining at the door. These energies seem like a hammer at the heart of your loved one. Your ruler, Mercury, moves through mixed feelings and emotionally duplicitous Pisces. You can easily fall prey to rewriting your past connections, making them seem better than they were. In and of itself, this can be virtually harmless; it is when you go to the other mental extreme and place blame for your runaway broken heart squarely at your past lover’s feet. Please accept some of the responsibility for the relationship not going well. The same can occur in seemingly harmless disagreements. Continued in the sign of the home Cancer …
Cancer/Cancer Rising* (Jun 21-July 21): Begun in mentally realistic Gemini, your next-door neighbor who likes to pretend to easily get beyond feelings. You give them a home in which to roost. Once the Twins (at least one of them) admit to the fun they have exploring their feelings (at least the communication of them), then they can learn from you and Ms. Houston’s upbeat tune “So Emotional”: I don’t know why I like it/I just do/I remember the way we touch/I just wish I didn’t like so much/I get so emotional, baby/Every time I think of you/I get so emotional/Ain’t it shocking what love can do? Gifted (or cursed, depending on circumstance and perspective) with a deep capacity for intimacy, you can amp up the volume, interpersonally speaking to such a point of everyone drowning. Some would call this brand of connecting “smothery love.” That’s why it is helpful to keep the air signs of Gemini, Libra and Aquarius around to help you objectively analyze what kinds of touches you like so much. It is important for you to know how love shocks your ego defenses, breaking them down in order to be emotional, and loved better.
Leo/Leo Rising* (July 22-Aug 22): “Sing the song, Mommy,” says Bobbi Kristina at the beginning of “My Love Is Your Love.” A smooth reggae tune that includes the chorus It would take an eternity to break us/And the chains of Amistad couldn’t hold us. Oh, snap, a bit of ancestral wisdom in the song! La Amistad (Spanish for “friendship”) was a ship on which the African slaves mutinied but were captured near Long Island. Your sign symbolizes (and Whitney was born August 9, 1963) a willful application of your heart opening love to your children, a mate, friendship and higher (noble) principles of living. It would appear that Ms. Houston had it all (although it is rumored that she has debt to her record company). It is important to realize that maybe she didn’t receive the love she so desperately desired. She is more than a cautionary tale to all Leos who may demand to be given, or who exact a return on what has been given, instead of just singing the song from your truly open hearts. Your other song – yes, this Leo female would want two songs – is “Love Will Save the Day.” Ustedes y Amistad (You and friendship) will do just that. Love will always play the greater part/When your battles wear you down … Please rest your tortured soul.

Virgo/Virgo Rising* (Aug 22-Sept 22): Your neuroses are well-documented. “How Will I Know?”, one of Ms. Houston’s earlier hits, tells a story of a young woman left feeling uncomfortable with her feelings. The lyrics speak to not trusting your feelings and how love can be deceiving. Sound familiar? Without the passion to evaluate what would make you want to self-actualize leaves you flat-lining like a person who’s suffering a cardiac arrest. The song offers answers – say a prayer, ask someone who knows. The prayer part means stopping your ever thinking mind to cease processing. A bit of contemplation does wonders for you and your relationships. But, like the Delphi oracle said, “Everything in moderation” and “Know thyself.” To go overboard in your analysis of your intimate connections can leave everyone not knowing where they stand. Retreat, but don’t pull back as far as Cleveland (or Newark), OK?
Libra/Libra Rising* (Sep 23-Oct 22): Dolly Parton can expect more green in her mailbox because she wrote the classic cover torch song “I Will Always Love You.” The other cover from The Bodyguard was “I’m Every Woman,” written by the late Nick Ashford and the ever vivacious Valerie Simpson. What most do not know is that Ms. Houston paid serious homage to Chaka Khan (who recorded it first and also pregnant with her first daughter). Check out the video (it’s pure joy). Ms. Simpson is holding down keyboards (and the late Left Eye of TLC can be seen, too). What are you universally connected to? Who are your women, your tribe that brings you this brand of joy? How do you begin a new form of relating? Like this video, which contains all women (and Chaka’s blasting vocals at the end), how do you bring disparate folk together for something higher, loving and enduring? Please do not allow Mars re-evaluating his individualistic self in your 12th house of surrender and self-undoing to keep you isolated and paranoid. Reach out and touch (trust) someone, ain’t no mountain enough and the real thing, nothing like that, either. (Ashford and Simpson wrote those three tunes, too.) One of your scales contains real things …
Scorpio/Scorpio Rising* (Oct 23-Nov 21): My non-practicing lawyer self enjoyed this song “Lover for Life” from Whitney’s I’m Your Baby Tonight CD. You’ve heard my testimony/You’ve seen my evidence/Hey, it’s a crime of passion in every sense/And justice would be served/if you stayed here in my world. Take me I’m your prisoner/Will you sentence Me to be your lover for life? Sure, it’s cheesy, but I find that you work best, Scorpio, when you admit your sentimentalities, at least to yourself. You are a water sign, you know, built best for expression of feelings, passionate ones. And the longer the sentence of love, the more receptive and unconditionally loving you become. Revenge may be a dish best served cold, but your love’s process server is fully steamed up! Read Aries for further illumination, especially about how to rekindle the heat in your intimate relationships.

Sagittarius/Sagittarius Rising* (Nov 22-Dec 19): Some of my closest friends say I’m not over what rap and some hip-hop have done to R&B. “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay” was recorded in 1999, 20 years after hip-hop made its first mainstream splash. I’m gonna make it anyway/Close the door behind you/I rather be alone than unhappy. Scant melodies and a banging beat, her voice still ethereal and great. You live in the recognition when you are being treated respectfully, but you have a certain class that gives you a vision of when to leave the building or exit stage left. Through being more independent, you can say, “Go to hell!” to the cheating spouse or the fundamental thinkers who disapprove of your true free spirit. Keep your life simple and get some daily downtime; it’s hoped you won’t have to kick a lover to the curb in order to do this.
Capricorn/Capricorn Rising* (Dec 21-Jan 19): Everyone falls in love sometimes/Sometimes it’s wrong/And sometimes it’s right/For every win/Someone must fail/There comes a point/When we exhale. I shook my head in disbelief when I first heard this song. Thought it was less than a ditty and frankly believed it was less than her talent (read Sagittarius about my minor rant on the music industry). However, after I saw the movie and the friendships in Waiting to Exhale, I got over my initial dislike. Like you, we Scorpions can be too quick to judge. We wipe out our true souls through jumping to wrong conclusions. It’s a simple song because karma is simple. Plant lilies; lilies grow. It is sad to let Ms. Houston go, but in my honest moments, it is not a tragedy. The tragedy occurs if we do not learn from it. I understand she sang “Jesus Loves Me” the night before she died (like Capricorn Dr. King talked before he died about Moses and not getting into the promised land). On some level, she knew what she had planted. Capricorn, you get a consistent fountain of inspiration from Leos. Please learn from Whitney. If there is a life you are meant to live or a love you feel within your soul, allow no authority, human or divine, to dissuade you. If Jesus loves you, he loves whom you love, too. I say exhale on that garbage of hating the sin but loving the sinner … it’s a difference without a distinction, like seeds planted on rocky shallow ground. Shoop, shoop, Whitney, may your wounds be healed.
