We are waterlogged.
We’re at a logjam.
Hello, beaver. In first nation/Native American lore, each of us gets at least one totem animal, a spirit who protects us. For example, I have a friend who reportedly sees foxes on her way home from the office (she lives in the suburban Baltimore area). These animals choose you to aid in your development. Beavers represent building structures that last. (Foxes aid you in camouflage, in blending in when you don’t want to be seen.)

A major building block of astrological language is the elements: fire, earth, air and water. All of the elements speak the same language, as if they were from the same country of origin. They’re like your homeboys or around-the-way girls. You are simpatico; you get each other with minimal explanation. Because one of the ways I see astrology is an excellent tool to improving our relationships, knowing your element and who speaks the same language can be helpful to understanding our similarities as well as our differences.

So I’d suggest reading the entire section devoted to your element. We can use the physical properties of each element as metaphors offering clues to how we might behave. It is clear that this fourfold division points to our psychological health or dysfunction (when excessive or repressed).

In order to facilitate better understanding, I will start each column with the element in which we are currently traveling. And I will group each sign according to its element. Some weeks, you will receive an individual message, and sometimes your message will be found connected to another sign.

We are waterlogged.
We are currently finishing up an excellent winter here in KC, so we are flowing out of Pisces (an adaptable water sign) into Aries. Spring begins March 20 at 12:15a CDT.

Water Element

We need your soothing and healing ways. Without Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, love would not be in our atmosphere, bringing us together to make life better for all. The children, underdogs and wounded would have no advocates if it weren’t for your ability to notice what and who tends to go unnoticed. It is indeed the sentiment that matters. Water signs speak a nonverbal language that everyone can easily ignore but is felt (often behind the scenes).

Pisces, February 19-March 19, adapting feeling

Due to the current Mercury retrograde (until April 4), I am prone to rereading a book I have already read. This little planet of communication and perception does its re-evaluating tailspin three times a year for three weeks (thrice, Hermes or “third time’s the charm” has its origins in this astronomical phenomenon). Any activity that you can place the prefix “re” before is suggested during these time periods, hence, my rereading a book.

As part of the “We are waterlogged” reference, let me refer to last week’s column because I reread it. Forgive me, if you felt I was a little harsh to the fishes. It’s mainly because you can have an elusive narcissism that, like fish, is difficult to catch. During a Mercury retrograde (and this one has the hallmark of either building your self-worth or tearing it down), you are called to re-evaluate your relationships. It is beyond time to shore up your actual effect on others. Bullying or playing the victim simply will not be tolerated. You are the author of your own reality. Even when you feel that you cannot change the outer world, you can reframe and alter your inner reaction to it. (That goes for each of the water signs, not just you, Pisces.)

Mercury will spend March 23-April 16 in the sign of Pisces, giving the not so affectionately called “garbage pail of the zodiac” a new lease that is now in desperate need of release. Scorpio, October 23-November 21, concentrating feeling

Begun in Pisces. Scorpio, you act as the moral arbiter to oftentimes impressionable and wishy-washy Pisces. Your fierce adherence to truth and your ability to speak it can make a huge difference in just how narcissistic and fake these seemingly fragile people become. You thrive on creating boundaries; they do not. With the current Mercury energy highlighting your sixth house of daily routine, work and health, become the psychic health inspector you know you are. Explore the details of why your co-workers have simply lost their minds and have begun to behave as what one Cancer describes as “narcissistic whack jobs.” It is up to you. Those who are beyond your instruction, ignore.

Cancer, use the last days of winter to relax and restore your soul. Call up an old co-worker or boss who had your back through your thornier work history. Fire Element

Passion walks hand in hand with enthusiasm of the fire signs of Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. Your element can be the most noble or self-serving. There are times when you take the air out of the room with your constant demands for an audience. When the deeds are authentic enough, we will come and support. You are the zodiac’s “field of dreams.” This may not be heaven, but it also ain’t Iowa. For those of you who are missing the references, Google (yes, I just used it as a verb) the 1988 movie Field of Dreams. Don’t want to? Then understand that your life (hell, our lives) begins with a vision.

Aries, March 20-April 19, initiating spiritual (fire, visionary)

Until March 23, reinvestigate why you speak and assert yourself the way that you do. Ask others for their perspectives on how you are seen. Have you been saving face, behaving from a proud stance instead of humbly receiving constructive criticism? There are a couple of planetary cycles that have thrown you off balance. Through joining with healthy and mature folks of like mind and spirit, you can realize you are not alone. But, we are not going to offer our help to any distant and arrogant a**holes or intense bee-at-ches without a plan other than to stir up drama. Get a clue … or several.

Leo, July 23-August 22, concentrating spiritual (building your identity)

Read Aries. Your spiritual flavor is expanding. You are moving from a Vanilla with sprinkles to a Pralines and Cream. Still white-appearing but with nuts and honey. Huh? For the next week, you get to play with different tastes and textures, particularly within your most intimate relationships. Take a risk of opening your multi-flavored heart. Well, at least lose the missionary fallback position. Single? Celibate? Horny? Stop. The love you save may be your own. When your heart is closed, it is like eating melted ice cream.

Sagittarius, November 22-December 21, adapting fall

Want to be you until March 23. You have loving and pleasure-seeking Venus sitting pretty with your enthusiastic and expansive ruler Jupiter in the evening skies (she’s the brighter one). It doesn’t get much better than this. However, Saturn casts his dispersions from Libra, the sign that represents your 11th house of friends and your individual vision for improving the world. In other words, you must do something with your largesse. It is not enough to simply give from your abundance; you must give until you feel an opening or a loss, as it were. Otherwise, your giving begins to seem a compulsive habit that says more about you than the person to whom you’re giving. True friends tell you uncomfortable truths.

Earth Element

You are learning to deal with reality as it is. Taurus (possible hedonist), Virgo (possible workaholic) and Capricorn (possible control freak) round out the police people of the circle of animals, aka the zodiac. You are aware of your controlling tendencies, no doubt. Speaking the language of what is “real,” know that quantum physics still is developing theories regarding subatomic particles and quarks. Physical reality appears way more fluid and malleable than previously thought.

Taurus, April 20-May 20, concentrating earth (physical)

Jupiter and Venus rock your world. Let’s just hope it is not a narrowly defined universe. Submission requires a mission. Hello? The subterranean layers matter. Growing up around the third coast (Great Lakes) means that the depth of the waters leads the way to conquering what you used to consider impossible. The world’s eyes are all on you. It is as if you are a mother of twins. One is awake; the other sleeps. You think you know more than you do. Or when overly identified with your body, you believe that you are more attractive than maybe you are. Whatever. Pay attention, then be outcome unattached. And cease selling yourself for the latest bauble, mental-fucking partner or highest bidder.

Virgo, August 23-September 22, adapting earth (physical)

Virgo calms Capricorn through a series of projecting pouting lips. You virgins (which means pure or unmarried, not someone who has no sex) have a well-developed sense of what I call the “Yes, but … ” You agree with my constructive criticism only to reject said criticism. It may not be right, but it’s OK. Particularly as your main missionary man, Mercury, backtracks to help you take under advisement a number of soul requirements. Huh? Your soul desires a quantity of honest assessment of what you and another can be in your shared reality. Common sense (communally speaking) and integrity win the day. You may backtrack and alter course in your closest relationships, but only if it is your idea after conscious deliberation.

Capricorn, December 22-January 20, initiating earth (physical)

Capricorn, you place Taurus and Virgo in their proper and perfect places. We want you to give freely or give nothing at all. Similar to patriot Patrick Henry, who awakened us with “Give me liberty or give me death.” Akin to Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra (Google, please), realize that you synthesize dimensions in ways we can scarcely imagine.

Air Element

If we didn’t have you, we would not be able to get along at all. Gemini (the wordsmith), Libra (the diplomat) and Aquarius (the iconoclast/sociologist) round out the energies of objectivity and social networking and social justice. Abraham Lincoln and Rosa Parks were both Aquarians forging ways to make American society better, but not without upheaval and fireworks.

Without the two of you (the twins and the scales), life would be extremely dull. Both of you imagine a better world with love and new forms of creating pleasure. Venus delivers her own brand of magic through your soulful ways. Gemini, you have an unerring instinct to say the most compassionate things to those who need your insight. Until April 3, you have the planetary green light to offer your playful mannerisms to all those who seek you out. Libra, continue to open your mind and heart for that ideal connection. Even if you are in a relationship, remind yourself of why you love this other person. If you feel that you could love more, then by all means do. If single, take a page out of Virgo’s playbook: self-improve, self-improve, self-improve (not that those in relationships should become lax, either). What you clean up now, you won’t have to later. Aquarius, January 20-February 18, concentrating intellectual

No matter what your occupation, your life has been like a bioethics worker. When does life begin? When does the soul attach to a physical body? Do we have a soul, and what is the soul? It is the loftier questions that move in your mind, similar to background music in your mental elevator. With Uranus (free-spirited and deconditioned energies) moving through Aries, your mind is alive with what is possible. Taking risks is entirely more important than getting bogged down in outcomes and playing it safe. Allow yourself to be led by your higher self that takes the long view. You know what the problem is, but truth is your guiding light, no matter what so-called authorities may say.
