Die b4 U Die, hello grousing Sufis, yet again. Dedicated to Nicholas Ashford, singer-songwriter, May 4, 1941-Aug 22, 2011.
Virgo/Virgo Rising* (Aug 22-Sept 22): These midsummer days could be kinder to you. Through retreat into the recesses of your soul, we’ve been talking about, shall I say, higher things? Americans will misrepresent how often they go to regular church services by as much as 10 percent less than actually attend, according to one study from Duke University. Virgo, being the efficient earth (practical) sign, you have a propensity to marry yourself to an invisible being when life lands you in an intense crisis, only to abandon the sky god once it has passed. When you could be getting things done, getting it done or getting her done (original multitasker, you), you perceive church for church’s sake, as an inefficient use of your time. It is. Celebrate your life with or without a higher being. But make room for your own spirit to clean up the clutter of contradictory thoughts. Remember to allot time to contemplate how you want to be a better person without guilt or anxiety. After all, pleasurable Venus camps out in your sign until September 14, and She mandates that shared love is your only guiding force … that can be exhibited anywhere, cathedrals unnecessary.
Libra/Libra Rising* (Sep 23-Oct 22): Being a member of a minority or oppressed group gives you a perspective of the “outsider.” When stressed, you can utilize your heightened observational skills to know how to present yourself with minimal interference. This is one reason why I am fascinated with American popular culture. As Nero allegedly fiddled while Rome burned, I maintain that the more folks are famous simply for being famous a la Reality TV (and Libran Ms. Kardashian), the US of A has been set afire. Rampant narcissism erodes the development of empathy. No more do we have songs about “All You Need Is Love,” “Imagine” (by Libran John Lennon) or “What’s Going On?” We have an influx of auto tune and banal 3-D movies. Use your status as the sign that begins all forms of relating to correct the out-of-balance scales piled up on the selfish side. Daily, perform some soul-filled act of unpredictable goodness. Reach out, and yes, touch someone (written by the late Nicholas Ashford and his surviving wife, Valerie Simpson). Sure, one side of the scale thinks cynically. However, you live to learn the exquisite balance, so observe who’s in need of your scintillating smile, then beam forth. Take our souls up, Scotty. Pour one out for your homies or ancestors.
Scorpio/Scorpio Rising* (Oct 23-Nov 21): These last days of Mercury retrograde in Leo have tried your considerable patience. The demands of others can rankle your nerves. Everyone is either a backseat driver or a food critic from the corner of your kitchen. Ignore their words. Instead focus on their intent. You were born to learn how to pay rapt attention to what’s underneath well-defined surfaces. These critical (and often unsupportive) people desire your attention. Your pure feeling self (PFS) curses without thought of reprisal. Actually, your PFS enjoys the unadulterated feelings that curse words symbolize. Your PFS gives to others who are in legitimate pain or need. Your PFS scoffs at those who think they are better than anyone else without a corresponding need to help those less fortunate. The fact that Mercury spends three times (nine weeks) his normal amount of time in lavish Leo, says it all. Help those who ask and let the rest go. You do not have to be a Good Samaritan all the time. It is the First Nation’s adage regarding giving fish versus teaching someone how to fish that should be your guiding mantra. Yet, do not teach the unwilling, recalcitrant or aloof ones.

Sagittarius/Sagittarius Rising* (Nov 22-Dec 19): Beneath your mischievous and inquisitive exterior lies the soul of someone searching for the “One.” Oh, you’ll joke and cajole and flirt with almost anyone. Sag males do it in the form of “hero worship” (you know, the guy who knows all the “important” stats of his favorite sport). Sag females simply let all of whatever they want hang out in front of any onlookers. Yet, in your quiet moments, who loves the clown or trickster? Angels. Yes, I said angels. Imaginary (but potent) messenger spirits, that’s who. Wind, animals, stones, anything in the physical world has messages of deep import. You have to clear your egoistic mind and leanings. The ego expects vindication. Angels, as I am talking about them, stay away from these types of energies. Take to focusing on the meaning of the many messages you receive, and the “One” is closer to you than you think. Start by assessing your true self in your favorite mirror, then ask for honest feedback from others about what you’ve been missing in their lives. If you cannot get along with your friends, how can you have a reasonable good love relationship, much more that is required when you meet the “One”? In my quiet moments, I believe you created the lore around the “One.”
Capricorn/Capricorn Rising* (Dec 21-Jan 19): There’s an increased need (and possibly desire?) to broadcast your own beliefs and higher purposes to the rest of us. You have the planetary makeup to be, well, uncharacteristically optimistic. The universe has been showing its more benign side to you. It is important to learn your lessons, remember them, so you won’t have to repeat them. Getting told to eat your vegetables and brush your teeth make for good habits. Thinking the positive thought has been found in one study to reduce the chance of stroke. Tell us what your armchair philosopher self has seen through your mind’s eye. You’ll be surprised what our response will be as you open up and share what’s really going on inside of you. And, yes, we want to hear it. There is no thinking otherwise, ’cause that would be negative. Judgments just lead to more judgments. That’s why you are challenged to be more accepting and open.
Aquarius/Aquarius Rising*(Jan 20-Feb 19): Usually non-possessive and non-conforming in your relationships, this can be used as a smoke screen to be too detached from the personal needs of your loved ones. Use your large (and quick) brain to ascertain exactly which trauma (or abandonment) aids you in any selfish isolationist acts you’re performing. Helping you in your personal and interpersonal integration is hearth fire Vesta moving through your sign. In ancient Rome, the central hearth fire was taken from the family home and lit in the newly married. Vesta gives you the drive to perfect your support of humanitarian, political or social motivations. Not being worried about being a ‘group of one’ makes you wise, and oh, so attractive. Teach us to care to look at the big sociological picture, even when we don’t want to.
Pisces/Pisces Rising (Feb 18-Mar 20): Well, it is next week, and here we are ‘dying before we die.’ Being prepared like any good scout works wonders. However, this statement means more than power of attorney and do-not-resuscitate orders. It centers on accepting and recognizing when the need to let go has become apparent. Puberty, marriage, divorce and menopause are all deaths. Your sign carries the collective feelings of any situation. You were born to learn how to perceive, discern and then adjust to realities outside of control. That’s why such virtues as surrender, submission and renunciation are under your purview. Until February 3, 2012, you will feel as if you are treading water in your own transformation. Take a deep breath. Contemplate how you want to be seen and felt. Then, surrender. You will not drown because you weren’t as far from the shore as you thought …

Aries/Aries Rising* (Mar 21-Apr 19): OK, pioneer, your strength comes from the community to which you belong. It is the family connections that you create and sustain that will make the difference in your future. You see multiple possibilities through your ajna chakra (third eye). These distinct realities come to you. From where? A future and higher self, one that has a larger and long-range viewpoint. You are to use these ‘visions’ to inspire us to take immediate action to change our behaviors. You possess an enlightened self-centeredness, at your best. Or a brash disregard for others’ perspective, at your worst. So, it is the peer relationships that keep you walking this continuum of enlightenment or abject dismissive actions. The New Moon on Sunday 8/28 at 11:04p CDT conspires for you to analyze how you serve, having the right kind of work to perform and being healthy. If you are going to err, err on the side of humility. You’ll get to be more ‘you’ in a couple of weeks.
Taurus/Taurus Rising* (Apr 20-May 21): Nicholas Ashford died from complications from throat cancer. Each astrological sign has different body parts that it ‘rules.’ Ancient healers were also stargazers. Taurus (and Mr. Ashford was a Taurus) rules the throat. These songwriters wrote such tunes as “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” Ain’t Nothing Like the Real Thing” and their first No. 1 Hit “Let’s Get Stoned” for Ray Charles in 1966. As the zodiac’s only fixed earth sign, you seek permanence in an ever-changing world. You have the potential for incredible longevity. Ashford and Simpson’s career spanned five decades. My other favorite is “You’re All I Need to Get By” (covered by Mary J. Blige and Method Man). With this New Moon accentuating all the earth signs, you are in the catbird’s seat in terms of assessing your needs from your wants. You can redesign how you live your life through real conservation of the resources you have under your control. Seek what you know to be true, after all, your throat holds through intuitive ‘hits’ (no pun intended), trusting yourself brings us to you as our touchstone (fun fact: “Solid” was their biggest hit as singers). Everybody wins, when you come from a deep place of authenticity (the real thing). Nick knew.
Gemini/Gemini Rising* (May 21-Jun 20): Hip-hip hooray! Mercury begins to move again on Friday, August 26, at 503p CDT. As the god of the alleged coincidence between travelers, be on the lookout for running into those people who’ve been on your mind. You could even meet those fellow travelers for the first time, but know you knew them from another dimension, reality, time and space. Trust yourself with these “strangers.” (Don’t know about you, but after a while, almost everyone I meet seems familiar.) When Mercury moves slowly, he will bring those into your awareness to help with your next learning lessons. In your case at present, you are being schooled in opening your mind, releasing the critical voice implanted by a judgmental parent or close mate. If you need something to do to keep that bashing voice away, redecorating your home or having a pleasant house party is recommended. No sulking or brooding allowed.

Cancer/Cancer Rising* (Jun 21-July 21): Gifted with an excellent memory, return to June 1. What decisions were percolating with you regarding having more control over your life? Is it time to revisit them? To stand your ground, no matter how unpopular these decisions are with your loved ones is the best bet. However, I’m sure your good memory can also be considered a curse, where your crab pinchers are unable to let go of painful pasts. This New Moon (8/28 @ 1104p CDT) accents your mind rising above and moving beyond the pain. Helping this endeavor is your willingness to depend on your tenacious traits, not your martyred and neurotically sensitive ones. You’ve got an enormous heart. Trust it to lead you into some uncharted territories through your daily grind, be that work, errands or sitting in some of your best habitual haunts. Also, trust you’re exuding more enthusiastic energies that others sense, and want to know better.
Leo/Leo Rising* (July 22-Aug 21): Mercury begins to move in your sign on Friday, August 26, @ 504p CDT. As the planet of communication and trend spotting, you will have to find ways to express your newly developing self. Trust any new sounding board slowly. It’s best to accentuate the familiar in any discussion of what you see coming down the pike. To spread too much of your inventive self too soon may you getting ripped off. Err on the side of caution. For those in relationships, download Ashford and Simpson’s “Is It Still Good to Ya?” Ashford’s (may he rest in peace) Moon (mood, subconscious, instincts) was in Leo. Who could forget his leonine mane back in the ’70s? Come to think of it, he looked like a cat. Even if you are alone, this tune still has meaning. After all, you have inquisitive Mercury in your sign until September, keeping you ripe with questions of how to make a better life for yourself and those who depend upon you. Hint: The answers are within and not dependent on what others think about you. If it ain’t still good to ya, then it’s time to discover what is …
