Off the Couch

“I think we’re seeing that Greg Robinson’s ability to defense the Raiders had a lot more to do with the talent he had in Denver than the talent he has here in Kansas City.”
— Bob Gretz, assessing the Chiefs’ first-year defensive coordinator, KCFX 101.1

GH: Gretz’s postgame comments are more direct and pointed than anything he has to say during the week. Let’s hope he continues to be frank and not Betty.

“You’re going to take over this program on a full-time basis because you’ve changed a lot. You’ve matured a lot; you’ve learned a lot since you first started doing this show … I think you’re going to do a really great job. Soren’s the right guy for this job and you’re all going to see that.”
— Don Fortune, to his replacement, Soren Petro, after Fortune was quietly removed from his afternoon talk show under the guise of semi-retirement, KMBZ 980

GH: After watching Fortune get his ass kicked for three years by 810 WHB’s Kevin Kietzman, 980 finally demoted Fortune to Royals pre- and postgame. The charade that this was a glorious retirement party for one of Kansas City’s finest broadcasters was a joke — and all those who participated in it know it.

“The first name is right: the Don of sports in Kansas City. You’ve stood watch on this town, Don. And I think it’s very unique and very special. I don’t know if any city has or even would be possible to have someone who has accomplished what you’ve accomplished.”
Soren Petro, 980

GH: Petro made the mistake of pretending he was in awe of Fortune when he was awarded the afternoon slot two years ago; everyone who listened to him on KCTE knows he has no respect for the guy. Let’s hope Petro’s new show is more honest than Fortune’s last one.

“Don, the one thing I’ve always respected about you is your survival skills. You don’t make it in this business for 38 years without being wise and strong. You survived.”
Jason Whitlock, The Kansas City Star

GH: Whitlock spent his Friday morning show degrading and humiliating Fortune. The next day he writes a kiss-ass column in The Star about how much Fortune meant to him and KC sports. Much of the sports media in this town has become an incestuous circus, with Whitlock its biggest clown.
