Off the Couch
“We had a couple of [air travel] situations last year that frankly were quite scary.”
— Missouri coach Quin Snyder, discussing the tragic death of ten members of the Oklahoma State men’s basketball family in a plane crash after they left Boulder, Colorado, January 27, Omaha World-Herald
GH: During a trip to Baylor last season, the cabin of the Tigers’ team plane suddenly depressurized, requiring an emergency landing in Springfield, Missouri.
“That’s the only place I don’t like playing. The Antlers always heckle you.”
— Jeff Boschee, Kansas shooting guard, on playing at MU’s Hearnes Center, WDAF Channel 4
GH: Boschee made this comment before the Tigers (and the offbeat Antlers cheering section) upset the Jayhawks in Columbia on January 29.
“The Antlers are very creative. When I played [at Kansas], at 1, 2, 3 and 4 o’clock in the morning, I got a cheese pizza delivered to (my hotel room) with a dead fish on it.”
— Kevin Pritchard, former Jayhawk and current coach of the Kansas City Knights, WHB 810
GH: Is there any chance that was just a large anchovy from a secret admirer?
“Some people talk about mental toughness, and I have to agree. They look like they’re going to win every game when they step out on the floor.”
— Pritchard, on the current edition of the Jayhawks, 810
GH: As long as the floor doesn’t have Norm Stewart’s name on it.
“I didn’t realize that I was the reason [for the price hike in season tickets and parking]. If I am, then I hope I’m worth it.”
— Dick Vermeil, after Soren Petro asked how it felt to be the reason the Chiefs raised their ticket prices by an average of $6 per ticket and parking up to $18 and $25, KMBZ 980
GH: About 80,000 other souls are hoping right along with you, coach.
