Off the Couch

“What do the Chiefs have to show for being $31 million over the salary cap? Where are the Super Bowl rings? To me, that’s the interesting thing. Somebody’s been making some mistakes. Thirty-one million dollars over the cap and you don’t have a Super Bowl ring or a championship ring to show for it?”
— Bill Maas, WHB 810

“I think the release of James Hasty is really going to hurt.”
— Jason Whitlock, 810

GH: Hasty is over the hill and not worth the money his seniority would demand. Where Hasty will be missed is as a Chiefs’ informant for Whitlock.

“It’s not depressing [to cut Chester McGlockton, Hasty and Elvis Grbac in the same day]. This is the NFL, and I think it’s part of the excitement in the NFL.”
— Greg Robinson, Chiefs defensive coordinator, 810

GH: The excitement of the NFL is in winning. Robinson is going to have to find some corners who can cover (and tackle) or the Chiefs are going to be looking up at the Raiders and Broncos again next season.

“I don’t need someone who knows who the owner of the Royals is.”
— Whitlock, after his new female cohost (Magnificent Megan) was unable to name the owner of the Royals, 810

“It’s not about knowing the trivia, it’s about the understanding.”
— Magnificent Megan, 810

GH: Whitlock might want to inform Megan that knowing who David Glass and Lamar Hunt are is not considered trivia here in Kansas City. Whitlock’s show has needed a jump start since his decision to “raise the bar,” but Megan is off to a less than magnificent start.

“This could be the year Kansas gets to the Final Four. They’ve got inside strength. [Nick] Collison is terrific. And the more and more they recognize that he should get the ball more in the block, they are going to take off, and that’s going to open up things for both [Kirk] Hinrich and [Jeff] Boschee.”
— Bob Sundvold, 810

“[Jamaal] Tinsley is a very, very good guard. But I’ve been more impressed with Kirk Hinrich.”
— Dave Bliss, Baylor coach, when asked to name the Big 12’s best all-around player, Omaha World Herald
