Off the Couch

“The possible headline in [Jeffrey] Flanagan’s column could have been; ‘Catman and White Rose Looking for Jobs.’ Flanagan says their share was 4.5 [compared with Kietzman’s 12.2 share in males 18-45]. My information is that their numbers in March were much lower than that.”

Jason Whitlock, WHB 810, on the spring Arbitron ratings that showed station mate Kietzman’s show to be well ahead of KMBZ’s “Fortune and Rose.”

GH: The back and forth bashing between WHB and KMBZ has been both bloody and entertaining. Read on.

“We have people here [in the media] who are less consumed with earnest hardcore work, knowledge, information and fact gathering than to create controversy, start fires, speak out of both sides of their mouths. They suck up to people in person and then rip them behind their backs, using whatever mediums are available.”
— Jim Rose, KMBZ 980

“The White Rose once described himself to me as the gamecock of the walk. He told me ‘I’m the gamecock of the walk in Nebraska.’ He said he was running things in Lincoln. He was the man. … Knowing [KMBZ] and their infinite wisdom, they’ll promote John Doolittle and Soren Petro. You could put Stankem’ in the booth and draw ratings that bad.”

— Whitlock, 810

“I’ve had people in this market, in the short time I’ve been here, create lies about me and spread those lies over public airwaves and in print. What did I ever do to them? I’m just trying to earn a living. I’m working for a company that I’ve always respected and appreciated. Now all of a sudden because I’m in competition with them, now they just start creating, making up lies about me. What did I ever do? What did any of us do to deserve that?”
— Jim Rose, 980

GH: Did Rose think he was heading to Wahoo instead of Kansas City? Radio is a nasty business. Sports talk radio in KC has been nastier than most markets for almost a decade. The audience is telling KMBZ that its gamble of bringing Fortune back for another year was a mistake. A mistake that could result in Entercom’s giving up the fight and dumping sports-talk programming in favor of an all-news format.
