Off the Couch
“This year’s Royals team would probably beat the ’85 Royals team…. I can guarantee you this Royals team would beat the ’77 Royals team.”
— Kevin Kietzman, in March of this year, WHB 810
“I was the only one saying in February and March that this team’s pitching was going to be terrible. Everybody else was predicting this was the year the Royals would be in a pennant race, but I said the Royals’ pitching stunk.”
— Kietzman, repeatedly in May of this year, 810
GH: It appears KK may have a credibility problem.
“He says he wishes, just once on a flight back to Kansas City, someone who recognized him would tell him off, say he did a lousy job with the Chiefs, instead of patting him on the back, complimenting his work and telling him he got jobbed.”
— Paul Kuharsky, referring to former Chiefs coach Gunther Cunningham, Tennessean
GH: Somebody get Gunther a subscription to the Pitch.
“Gunther used the ‘I’ word more than most coaches do. He also tried to appease too many guys who weren’t playing well. We thought he had to kiss [butt] to get some guys to play hard.”
— Tim Grunhard, Tennessean
GH: Grunhard is my least favorite kind of professional athlete turned sportscaster. He berated fans for a decade for criticizing and getting on the local team for underachieving, but he blasts former teammates and coaches after they’ve left town. Grunhard’s tummy is limited to what flops over his belt.
“In Kansas City, [Elvis] Grbac said his locker was ‘out of the way,’ and sometimes he spoke to a player only once in four years.”
— Mike Preston, columnist, Baltimore Sun
GH: Now Elvis is blaming his locker assignment on his lack of chemistry with his Chiefs teammates?
“You always hope the card games don’t get too big. I’ve seen several thousand dollars lying there in the aisle that you have to step over to get to the lavatory.”
— Tony Muser, on the amount of money gambled in card games on the Royals’ chartered flights, Royals Radio
GH: And Pete Rose can’t get into the Hall of Fame because his gambling was an embarrassment to the game?
