Off the Couch
“It looked like you knocked the shit out of him, Mike.”
— Bob Dutton, Kansas City Star Royals-beat writer, while interviewing Mike Sweeney in the postgame locker room, KMBZ 980
GH: KMBZ did not edit the Sweeney postgame interview, letting Dutton’s expletive fly over the airwaves. Very few fans at the game were aware of what instigated Sweeney’s rage, but KMBZ’s postgame show that night was exceptional in filling in the details. Nate Bukaty, John Doolittle and Soren Petro hustled sound from both locker rooms and had fans from Peculiar to Platte City glued to 980 deep into one of the most memorable nights in Royals history.
“I don’t think so. I think that’s the last thing somebody would want to hear now. How often do you hear an owner or a general manager give a manager a vote of confidence and then [he gets fired]? That’s a nice thing to say, but anything can still happen.”
— Joe Randa, when asked if David Glass’ vote of confidence for Tony Muser was a good thing, WHB 810.
“It just gives the birds something to shoot at when they fly over the stadium.”
— George Brett, on his new statue that was dedicated last week, 980
“I just panicked while you were roasting me [on the radio], and I told you I was in [a car] accident. I have to be very honest with you and your fans. I panicked. I was not in an accident and that’s the truth.”
— Don Kincaid, owner of the Comets, after telling Kevin Kietzman the day before that he was late for an in-studio interview because he wrecked his car, 810
“I would say that to the Watson girl anybody that reads is a bookworm.”
— Danny Clinkscale, after Watson’s girl Jennifer Eichler was quoted in The Star saying Kietzman looked like someone who was “always into books,” 810
“Vermeil and his offensive coordinator, Al Saunders, might just employ the most diverse and explosive offense Kansas City has ever seen.”
— Jason Whitlock, after the Chiefs’ 20-0 win over the Redskins, Kansas City Star
GH: Spoken like a guy whose history with the Chiefs goes all the way back to 1994.
