Norrit’s Rhythm EP Release Party

In days of historic parsimony, the unrelenting bass lines of The Rhythm EP can feel excessive, blithe and self-indulgent. Unhinged from its social context, however, DJ Norrit‘s debut release on Tactic’s Think 2wice Records fulfills the promise of what it purports: four tracks of mostly electronic remixes meant to drag your ass to the dance floor. Each song takes its own winding detour through various interpretations of house to a shared destination of orgiastic techno decadence. “Move,” a remix of Kansas City rapper Royce Diamond’s “Everybody Move,” accomplishes what many remixes do not: It makes the original song better. Infused with reverb and drum lines that fold back on themselves like finely manicured origami, the track reshapes Diamond’s original hook (Can’t nobody sound like me) from an apish Nelly arpeggio to an otherworldly clarion call of hip-house. Norrit’s creative funk isn’t catholic (some simply prefer their bass at a safe, noninvasive distance), but The Rhythm EP proves that the rhythm method can be quite effective.
