Night + Day picks: What to do this weekend

With Valentine’s Day and Mardi Gras festivities, this weekend represents a holiday double whammy — a triple whammy if you count Chinese New Year (although locally, most celebrations for that happened last weekend).

Plus, there’s tons of totally-not-related-to-a-holiday fun happening. And this all boils down to one fact: You have no good reason to stay in. So, get out there. Maybe do one of these things:

1. Get gussied up and help raise money for local HIV/AIDS patients during the Millennial League’s Val-O-Ween party

tonight at the Madrid Theatre.

2. Look a little closer at the efforts of an artist whose work you’ve seen all over town. Muralist Alexander Austin, who The Pitch profiled in 2008, finally gets to show off some smaller-scale creations in his first solo gallery show, opening tonight at the YWCA’s 6th Street Gallery.

3. Earn some beads at one of the many Mardi Gras parties happening around town on Saturday night.

4. Relive your favorite decade during Crosstown Station’s 80s Prom on Saturday night.

5. Cheer on your favorite team of Latino basketball players during the Tony Aguirre Latino Men’s Basketball Tournament, taking place in various local gyms, including the Sprint Center, on Saturday and Sunday.

6. Take out your sweetheart. Or find a new one. From singles dances to romantic dinners to Valentine card defacement, Kansas City offers it all this Sunday, February 14.
