Nectar of the Wizards

The Kansas City Wizards got off to a blustery start this year, playing three of their first four home games in 40-degree weather with 30-mph winds. That kind of weather doesn’t deter Chiefs fans — as long as they can steel their senses with beer. To that end, the Wizards are working with O’Malley’s Irish Pub (500 Welt in Weston, 816-640-5235) to brew a soccer-specific beer that fans can imbibe when the team’s new stadium at the site of the former Bannister Mall opens in 2010. The brew gets a test run this afternoon during a watch party at O’Malley’s for the team’s 2:30 p.m. matchup against Toronto FC. Ten gallons of the cast-conditioned brew will be given away for sampling; after that, pints cost $2. Responsible hooligans might want to consider dropping $12 for a bus ride, which leaves at noon from the 810 Zone (4686 Broadway, 816-268-9663) and includes free burgers and brats.
