Music Forecast: Seven Lions, Marrow, Sky Smeed, Midcoast Takeover
Seven Lions
Jeff Montalvo is here to prove that EDM can offer a full concert experience. The Santa Barbara producer and DJ has been the force behind several major remixes. (His breakout was a version of Above & Beyond featuring Zoë Johnston’s “You Got to Go.”) He’s one of EDM’s rising stars, with a must-see live show. Watch his fine-boned, longhaired form sway and contort to the beats he lays down while his hands work effortlessly over his controls. It’s enough to help even the most tightly wound among us cut loose.

Marrow, Sima Cunningham
Marrow is in the process of zipping up its full-length debut, and if it’s anything like the Chicago four-piece’s first EP, expect a blissful marriage of female and male singing and spirited pop. Fellow Chicagoan Sima Cunningham is also on this tour in support of The Wolf That Eats the Sheep, an album of delicate and smooth Americana songs.

Sky Smeed, Truckstop Honeymoon
Last March, Sky Smeed released Drive All Night, an album that revealed the then-32-year-old’s growth. It’s full of personal elements camouflaged as folksy anecdotes in songs such as “Talkin’ Medical Marijuana Blues” and “Smoke ‘n’ Spice.” Live, Smeed is bottomless charm — his personality is made for the stage. Folk duo and real-life married couple Truckstop Honeymoon is also on deck, so dust off your dancing boots.

Midcoast Takeover with the Hillbenders, Nicholas St. James, the Hardship Letters, the Brad Cunningham Band
The Midwest Musical Foundation’s annual SXSW fundraiser is well under way. Pop in Saturday at Knuckleheads to sample from this year’s fresh talent in country and Americana, with the whiskey-barrel-voiced Nicholas St. James, the down-in-the-mouth (but ever-so-talented) Hardship Letters, the energetic Hillbenders and the sweet-sounding Brad Cunningham Band.
