Mumford and Sons braved the rain to deliver a stand-out show

Mumford & Sons took the stage 45 minutes early, racing the weather. When the rain came hard (the reason there aren’t many photos, I’m sorry), they didn’t flinch. The band tore through a set that spanned their full catalog. The sound shifted from raw folk to full-blown rock, with Marcus Mumford behind the drums one moment and at the mic the next.

The rain turned everything up a notch. We didn’t run for cover, we leaned in.

Near the end, Marcus looked to the wings and said, “We need some help.” Then Ted Lasso’s core cast walked on stage including Kanas City native Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, and Brendan Hunt. The crowd roared into the night. Together they sang the Ted Lasso theme, written by Mumford himself. It was chaotic, joyful, weird, and perfect. No encore, no speeches. Just a drenched, grinning crowd and a band that didn’t let a storm steal the night.

I have wanted to cover Gregory Alan Isakov since the beginning of my career and I fear we were both cut short. Gregory Alan Isokov started right on time to beat the impending rain but the rain, even at a drizzle, impacted the camera so I had to make my moves quickly. Despite the rain, their set Thursday night opening for Mumford & Sons was filled with beautiful lighting that drew attention and contagious energy. Gregory’s low and weathered voice fit the atmosphere as it carried over the lawn. With only six songs on their set, each was carefully crafted just for us.
