Moving Pictures

2/5 & 2/8
Watching the PBS documentary on contemporary artists Art:21 — Art in the 21st Century can be frustrating if you view it on a screen that’s too small. On a 10-incher, how are you supposed to read the tiny, handwritten text in Raymond Pettibon‘s ink drawings? The Spencer Musuem of Art (1301 Mississippi on the KU campus in Lawrence) solves that problem with a projector in its auditorium. The series has already started, but there’s still time to catch the final four installments. On Thursday, two episodes — “Stories and Loss” and “Desire” — play back-to-back from 7 to 9 p.m. But we’re most excited to check out Sunday’s “Time” and “Humor” episodes; the latter features a rare interview with the reclusive, punk-damaged Pettibon. It starts at 2 p.m. For details, call 785-864-4710.— Michael Vennard
File Away
Embrace organized living.
FRI 2/6
Filing: a word that makes us instinctively invent excuses. Yet local artists have been voluntarily filing work at the H&R Block Artspace (16 East 43rd Street, 816-561-5563) since 2001. That’s when Joe Amrhein brought flat files from Pierogi 2000 to town for an exhibit that allowed viewers to thumb through literal files of artists’ works on paper. At the same time, the Artspace began a Kansas City Flat File. On view starting Friday, the file now contains pieces by 130 artists.
Amrhein started Pierogi 2000 because it was nearly impossible to get a gallery show in New York. His filing system, a low-cost display alternative, helped emerging artists gain visibility. In Kansas City, young artists can find spaces willing to take a chance on them. Our Flat File simply stands as a testament to the varied innovations of local creators.— Gina Kaufmann
Boobcentrism
SAT 2/7
When civilization crumbles, our unfortunate descendants will look back and marvel at a few films: Citizen Kane, Casablanca and Beyond the Valley of the Dolls. Boobcentric director Russ Meyer’s paean to good times and rock and roll follows the Carrie Nations as the band advances from local girl group to superstardom to a climactic sex-and-drug-fueled crash. Presented by the Chucky Lou AV Club at midnight Saturday (Dickinson Top Two Theatre, 5909 Johnson Drive in Mission), the life-altering film will be introduced by music from the Stretchmarxxx. One lucky moviegoer will leave with a mod go-go ensemble, another with a floor-length fur coat. Admission is $6.— Christopher Sebela
