Motocross to Bear

For most non-motorcyclists born after 1984, motocross brings to mind images of Nintendo’s 8-bit epic Excite Bike, in which pixellated riders faced gigantic jumps and harsh competition. Art imitated life, but today’s motocross is an athletic feat that requires far more advanced skills than mashing buttons. Observe the exciting necessity for racing helmets tonight at the Toyota AMA Arenacross Series at Kemper Arena (1800 Genessee). Watch top motocross pros race across bumpy mud and then defy gravity in a freestyle jump competition. Among the pros will be local racer Dennis Jonon. A native of Spring Hill, Kansas, Jonon has been qualifying in main event races through the series while healing from a hip injury. The all-ages event starts at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets cost $21 and are available through the Kemper Arena box office. For more information, call 816-513-4000.
