More layoffs coming at the Star

By JUSTIN KENDALL
The Pitch didn’t get its copy of the Star this morning. I called the customer service number and spoke with a rep who told me that they’d “sold out” of papers today and would be “cranking out another batch” either this afternoon or tonight. She told me that she’d fielded several complaint calls from irate customers.
Meanwhile, my colleague Peter Rugg walked over to 18th and Grand, where he saw this sign taped to the door of the Star Store:
All of this sounded like a cruel joke. After what was undoubtedly its busiest night at the end of a grueling campaign season, the Star sells so many papers it has to have a second printing. Meanwhile, more Star employees are bracing to lose their jobs.
After 120 layoffs and buyouts in June and 65 more in September, another round of layoffs is expected at the paper no later than Thanksgiving. We’ve heard, however, that the bad news might come as early as Friday.
