Mooney Suzuki
In the early days of indie rock, there was no greater insult than the dreaded s-word — sellout, not the one an irked Roy Williams occasionally uses in interviews. Bands that bill themselves as classless working stiffs once earned this tag if they signed with major labels, but now they’re lauded as the Rockin’ Hoods of the record industry, stealing from the fat cats to play their no-frills rock. Brooklyn’s Mooney Suzuki recently joined this illustrious bunch by signing with Epic and re-releasing last year’s rowdy Electric Sweat. The record now comes with a neon-pink cover and a few bonus videos, but if the raw emotion that this quartet displayed during its Lawrence appearance last month offers any indication, the Mooney Suzuki hasn’t changed much in moving from the garage to the penthouse.
