Missouri is gonna go ahead and give your personal information to Trump’s creepy, Kobach-led voting commission
On Wednesday, every secretary of state in the country received a letter from Kris Kobach asking them to send all publicly available voter data — full names, addresses, dates of birth, political party, last four digits of Social Security numbers, elections voted in since 2006 — to the Presidential Advisory Commission on Election Integrity, a Trump-created commission that Kobach heads up.
Kobach needs the information because he is a xenophobic ghoul fueled by minority voter suppression needs to “study” the issue of voter fraud in the U.S. It’s Friday, so let’s skip the part about how Kobach has spent the last decade consumed by a desire to expose voter fraud but cannot seem to find examples of it.
A whole bunch of states — 22 as of this writing — are not complying with Kobach’s request. For example, Mississippi’s Secretary of State, a Republican, responded to the commission’s request by saying today:
“They can go jump in the Gulf of Mexico and Mississippi is a great state to launch from. Mississippi residents should celebrate Independence Day and our state’s right to protect the privacy of our citizens by conducting our own electoral processes.”
If you live in Missouri, though, your information will be handed over to this dystopian commission. St. Louis Public Radio reports that “voters’ names, addresses, voting sites and elections they voted in” will be sent to the commission. But “the state will not give the commission any Missouri voter’s Social Security number, political-party affiliation or identify how they voted.”
This decision was made by Missouri Secretary of State Jay Ashcroft. Kobach previously worked underneath Jay’s father, John Ashcroft, when he ran the Justice Department under President George W. Bush.
The ACLU of Missouri has stated that it intends to file an open-records request with Ashcroft’s office “to ensure that the office maintains the integrity of public records and does not give any Missourians’ private information over to this administration’s voter suppression campaign.”
Former Missouri Secretary of State Jason Kander recently founded Let America Vote, an organization whose purpose is to fight the efforts of vote-suppressing lizard people such as Kobach.
“It’s obviously very concerning when the federal government is attempting to get the name, address, birth date, political party, and social security number of every voter in the country. I certainly don’t trust the Trump Administration with that information, and people across the country should be outraged.”
In a tweet, Kander added:

The Missouri Democratic Party called Ashcroft’s decision “spineless” and noted:
“Missouri’s Republicans in Jefferson City have cited privacy concerns to stonewall efforts to create a Prescription Drug Monitoring Program (PDMP) that would help fight Missouri’s opioid epidemic. As a result, Missouri is the only state in America without a PDMP program. For years, Missouri’s Republican officeholders have also cited privacy concerns to obstruct Real ID legislation.”
In Kansas, where Kobach is the Secretary of State, Kobach says he’s not going to give away your Social Security number to the commission, even though Kobach himself is the one who asked for it. You are not crazy, that makes no sense, and if you want to feel more crazy, you can read more here.
