Like Seth Rogan in a medium T-shirt, Millionyoung fits within chillwave only by stretching the genre’s confines. Mike Diaz’s brainchild possesses the requisite sleepy, sweeping synths and canned percussion of a bedroom-pop project, and its ambient shimmer suggests late-night melancholy and longing. But it’s not as lo-fi or shambling as its peers. On last year’s Be So True EP, the trancelike vibe took on a pulsing tone close to club music. Instead, this year’s recent Sunndreamm EP, available for free from millionyoung.com, adds more organic instrumentation — notably more acoustic and electric guitars — to a rhythmic Afro-Caribbean flavor. It indulges the band’s psychedelic impulses and downplays the dance elements, giving the music a renewed vibrancy. Millionyoung takes its experimental pop on tour as a live quartet this time around, in support of the band’s debut LP, slated to arrive in early 2011.
