Midlake

Midlake‘s full-length debut, Bamnan and Silvercork, sounded like a long-playing “Strawberry Fields Forever,” with its warped keyboards, pastoral melodies and impressionistic lyrics. The album vaulted the Denton, Texas, group into a rarefied stratosphere that’s occupied by astral knob tweakers such as Grandaddy and Sparklehorse. The group then promptly dodged pigeonholing by reinventing itself completely for last year’s The Trials of Van Occupanther.

The resplendent collection of ’70s-tinged soft rock translates fluidly in a live setting, where the five members demonstrate the pristine chops that they developed while attending the jazz program at the University of North Texas.
