MGMT at the Uptown, June 13

As anyone who’s heard MGMT‘s new album, Congratulations, can tell you — it’s a bit of a change. The album is a definite switch-up from Oracular Spectacular, and especially a step away from its massive hit, “Kids.” The record, due out next Tuesday, April 13, has a first half that’s psychedelic garage pop remiscent of 1910 Fruitgum Co. or the Association, whereas the back half is fairly banal, and barely worth listening to.

By all accounts, the band still delivers a crazy live show, and the stage of the Uptown ought to be big enough to provide an apt launching pad for the duo’s antics when they hit Kansas City on Sunday, June 13.
