Mean Mule to host free wellness retreat for service industry workers in KC
Mean Mule Distilling Co. in East Crossroads is hosting a free wellness retreat for service industry workers on February 25 – 26. Service industry employees of restaurants, bars, and cafes are welcome to register for the two-day event.
Mean Mule started began distilling agave spirits locally in 2016, then expanded when they landed their current space in East Crossroads. Now, Mean Mule is an award-winning agave distillery, cocktail bar, and event space. Meg Evans, Mean Mule Co-Founder and Chief Operations Officer, draws inspiration for this inaugural event from her jarring transition from teaching to the service industry.
“I’m not from the service industry, and when we started Mean Mule and got into the nitty-gritty of running a bar, it was a rude awakening. Working late nights, around alcohol all of the time, dealing with difficult people, and not having health benefits… etc. At that point, I knew the service industry needed way more support to be a viable career.”
While the retreat will not magically solve income inequality or make viral Karen moments disappear, the goal is to connect service industry workers with resources, provide tools, and spark helpful connections.
“Bar, restaurant, coffee, and service employees are always serving, and we consider them to be an overlooked population. We want to start a conversation!” says Evans.
In their best attempt to accommodate common service industry shifts, the events are planned for 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. After guest speakers, interactive activities, and treats from Oleo Coffee and Café Cà Phê, the hope is that guests leave with “a better sense of community and practical tools to live a more balanced lifestyle,” says Evans.
Activities include yoga, meditation, break-out discussions, and giveaways. Speakers including licensed healthcare providers and industry leaders will cover topics such as stress management, mental health, healthcare, and more.
Mean Mule is seeking additional sponsors, support, and participants. If you are a business that is interested in partnering, an individual interested in hosting a discussion circle, or have donations for gift bags, you may contact Evans at meg@meanmule.com.
Update: The event will now be held at Casual Animal Brewing Co. at 1725 McGee St, Kansas City, MO 64108.
