McCoy the band makes feelgood pop

With an album name like The Prayers that Set Us Free, it’s pretty easy to see that McCoy is a band with a spiritual side. I take no issue with that, especially since the foursome based in KC and Manhattan, Kansas, plays some pretty righteous pop songs. Four tracks from McCoy’s album are available for streaming on the band’s MySpace profile. I particularly dig “Honest,” an introspective tune with a slight twang that makes me want to roll down country roads in a beat-up pick-up truck. It’s not surprising that McCoy pulls off palatable. The band’s list of influences, including Wilco, Ryan Adams, Death Cab for Cutie and M83, reflects mostly solid (secular) tastes. McCoy has a gig coming up on March 7 at Heartland Church in Overland Park. That’s cool, but I’d rather see the band play some Sunday night at McCoy’s in Westport.
