Matchbox Bar and Grill now open across the street from former location

After failing to reach a new lease agreement with its landlord, Matchbox Bar and Grill — a cozy, unassuming sports bar on Southwest Boulevard — packed up and moved earlier this summer. It didn’t go far. Its new location is the former home of Dave’s Grill and Sports Bar, at 2934 Southwest Blvd — across the street and a couple blocks west of the Matchbox’s former home at 2853 Southwest Blvd.
“We’ve been here since the second week of July, but we just got our liquor license last week,” says manager Beth Adams. “We had our grand opening last Friday, on Halloween.”
The vibe is much the same — lots of sports and rock ‘n roll memorabilia on the walls — but the space is larger. Adams says they’ll be doing live music every weekend. The old Matchbox was one of a handful of local taverns that catered to early drinkers, with doors opening at 6:30 a.m. But for now, the new space’s hours are 11 a.m. to 1:30 a.m. Monday through Friday; 2 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. on Saturday; and 2 p.m to midnight on Sunday.
“We may bring those early hours back, but we want to be better established here first,” Adams says.
Happy hour ($1 off everything, which translates to $3 wells and $3 cans of beer) is from 3-7 p.m., and here’s the daily food specials:
