Mastodon, with Dillinger Escape Plan, last night at the Beaumont Club
There comes a time in most bands’ lives where a decision must be made regarding commercial appeal. Heavy-metal bands in general get to sidestep this thorny issue. After all, how much popularity can one get from cranking the amp stacks and screeching into a mic? Every once in a while, though, a metal band receives the Calling — the opportunity to evolve past being a popular metal band and graduate to regular old popular band. Mastodon got the calling a couple of years back, and the ascension was plain to see last night at the Beaumont Club.
