Mark Todd & Esther Pearl Watson at KU tonight

Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson are married artists and makers of ‘zines. Their work draws from popular culture, but is by no means pop art.

Watson does the fantastically uncomfortable, yet hopelessly addictive comic Unloveable which runs in every issue of Bust (one of the many reasons why I subscribe), and Todd works in both commercial design for clients like McSweeney’s, as well as his own art for art’s sake.

The couple is speaking at the University of Kansas tonight, as part of the spring 2010 Hallmark Symposium Design Series. It’s presented by KU’s department of design. The talk lasts from 6-8:00 p.m. in 3139 Wescoe on the KU main campus in Lawrence.

It’s free, too!

My friend Annie has this to say about them, as if looking at that astoundingly brilliant reworking of the Fantastic Four done by Todd wasn’t enough: “if you’ve ever needed/wanted a kick in the butt to start being creative and making something to share with the world, ATTEND— these people are wonderful ♥ ♥ ♥”

If you;re planning on going, give yourself a few extra minutes to park. There’s a basketball game tonight, and you’re going to have to hoof it.
