Emmy and Peabody Award winner Paul Mecurio has his sights set on KC. The New York native and The Late Night Show with Stephen Colbert regular will perform standup at the recordBar on Dec. 1st.
Mecurio is a busy man appearing regularly on national TV, acting in movies, starring in his own off-Broadway production, and hosting the podcast Inside Out.
Before getting into comedy Mecurio was a Lawyer and Wall Street banker. A lifelong fan of standup comedy, Mecurio began writing jokes in secret during his time as a Lawyer and eventually got his material to Jay Leno.
“I went up to him and said I don’t know if you need jokes, I’m never going to use these so you can take them,” says Mecurio. Luckily for him, Leno enjoyed his material and asked him to write for his monologues. From there, Mecurio began honing in on his skills, performing in dive bars and New York Comedy clubs.
“I started to live this double life. I would work as a lawyer by day and comic by night,” says Mecurio. He would continue to live this double life until he began to get bigger gigs at clubs like the Comedy Cellar and Gotham Comedy Club. As he began to gain notoriety, he would be noticed by the network behind The Daily Show, eventually getting on as one of the original six writers.
“That really helped push me up the ladder because I was working on a TV show now. I thought we were going to get canceled after three months but we didn’t. That was a really fun time because we were just creating comedy in the basement. We were this little show that no one knew about but began to get critical success, and it was a crazy ride that just continued” says Mecurio.
After his success with The Daily Show, Mecurio teamed up with Stephen Colbert and is now one of his closest friends and a regular on the program. Fans of the comedian and writer can follow Mecurio on his podcast, Inside Out, his off-broadway production Permission to Speak, and of course, on The Late Night Show.
