Making Movies’ ‘Aguanile’ is your Pitch Music song of the day

This year, the 2014
Pitch Music Awards Showcase is split over two nights, with the final taking place tonight at Knuckleheads Saloon (lineup details and tickets here.) The PMA Awards Show is at the Uptown Theater, held this year on Sunday, August 3, and hosted by World Air Guitar Champion Eric “Mean” Melin and Mills Record Co.’s Judy Mills (tickets here).

To count down to the awards ceremony – and help introduce you to this year’s picks – we’re debuting a “song of the day” each weekday until the show from one of this year’s batch of nominees.

OK, so, technically, “Aguanile” is not a Making Movies original. It’s a cover of Puerto Rican singer Héctor Lavoe’s classic, but this Panamanian-Mexican-American band does a damn nice job of reinterpreting it. A confession: I don’t think there’s anything this talented four-piece band couldn’t execute well, but I’m especially grateful that Making Movies has chosen to dedicate its efforts to mashing up a bunch of cultural influences and bringing a little spice to landlocked ol’ Missouri.
