Mabuhay-Hey

Taboo, the National Geographic Channel’s weekly exploration of cultural topics, once explained the culinary phenomenon of balut, describing the duck-fetus delicacy popular in the Philippines as “Philippine Viagra.” But we don’t have to consume a fertilized embryo with feathers and a beak to experience the true flavors of this country. Fiesta Filipina, the annual showcase of culture, food, music, dance and games, begins today at Overland Park’s Filipino Cultural Center (9810 West 79th Street, 913-381-1601). The Filipino Association of Greater Kansas City and Honorary Chairs Drs. Belino and Olivia Iway host this family-friendly event that commemorates Filipino independence with arts-and-crafts vendors, food, and performances by the Sinag-Tala Dance Troupe and Sampaguita Choir. Today’s events, which go from noon to 8 p.m., culminate with the Santacruzan, a traditional pageant and processional. The festival also runs from noon to 6 p.m. tomorrow. Admission costs $2; children 12 and younger are admitted free. For more information, see
