M83
There’s something beautifully numbing about Junk, the new album from French electronic band M83. The majestic, fuzzy orchestra masterminded by Anthony Gonzalez at times feels a bit much: too much repetition, too much sugar in the beats, too light in its mission and too heavy in its delivery. If the point gets a little lost sometimes, we can forgive Gonzalez — Junk presents like a rusty stereo deck salvaged from a long-forgotten wreck, and the more you listen to it, the deeper you fall into a mystic rabbit hole.

The Neighbourhood

Gone are the days of “sweater weather” for California quintet the Neighbourhood. It’s all sea-sprayed palm trees and twilight-streaked desolation on Wiped Out, the band’s latest album. Lead singer Jesse Rutherford agonizes over the usual anxieties, while his lyrics are half-buried by a gauzy wash of Bloom-era Beach House guitars and a few R&B-style tips from the Weeknd. The result is a polished album, even if it reads as a little too cool and calculated. Maybe the Neighbourhood will be a little warmer in person, when the band stops Tuesday at the Midland. Toronto rapper Jahkoy and L.A.’s Kevin Abstract open.

Journey and the Doobie Brothers
Saturday at the Sprint
Center, you can have it any way you want it — er, as long as that means
singing along to Jouney and the Doobie Brothers. The legendary rock
bands have joined forces for a co-headlining 2016 tour that features, as
you might expect, all the hits. You’ll have to look past the fact that
Journey’s iconic lead singer, Steve Perry, departed the band nearly 20
years ago. But the current lineup — including guitar mastermind Neal
Schon and lead singer Arnel Pineda — promises to deliver a convincing,
nostalgia-packed performance.
