Lucius, Alejandro Escovedo and Steven Wilson lead your live-concert week
Lucius
with the Cactus Blossoms
Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig could be sisters: Their voices sound made for each other, part of the same genetic makeup. Onstage, as the two lead singers for Brooklyn five-piece Lucius, Wolfe and Laessig match both in pitch and in dress, their immaculately coiffured hair dyed the same bright red. The effect is a little jarring, a little Through the Looking Glass, especially considering their wall-of-sound melodies — a blend of chamber pop and disco. Lucius’ latest album, Good Grief, builds on this reputation. Speaking of musical connections: Brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey, of the Minneapolis country duo the Cactus Blossoms, can whip up harmonies to make all of Nashville howl with envy.
7 p.m. Saturday, November 12, at RecordBar, 1520 Grand
Alejandro Escovedo with Jesse Malin
Kansas City has become like a second hometown to versatile rocker Alejandro Escovedo, and Knuckleheads is his favorite club, so you can expect a big celebration Saturday night as he stops here, on the heels of his latest release, Burn Something Beautiful. This album — which Escovedo co-wrote with R.E.M.’s Peter Buck and the Minus Five’s Scott McCaughey — has the feel of something once lost and now recovered: a little gritty, a lot soulful, like something made 25 years ago. Escovedo’s voice has never sounded better, and when he combs through lyrics exploring ragged and rough times — Escovedo has recently faced a PTSD diagnosis — you feel them searing into memory, too.
9 p.m. Saturday, November 12, at Knuckleheads, 2517 Rochester
Steven Wilson
Steven Wilson started his career in music more than 30 years ago, his breakthrough coming as the founder, singer, songwriter and lead guitarist for famed prog-rock act Porcupine Tree. These days, Wilson works alone — well, at least in name. His latest solo album, 4 1/2, is a brief 37-minute affair, but it’s a happy 37 minutes. Half of its six tracks are instrumental, and Wilson manages the balancing act beautifully. In the end, 4 1/2 is less album and more spiritual conversation: His painstaking attention to detail means that each transition — chord to chord, verse to verse, song to song — is impeccably managed, and the time flies elegantly by.
