Lucinda Williams is the perfect woman. She’s brilliant and gritty and can probably drink any average schlub under the table. She also has written some of the most haunting love songs of the last 20 years, thanks to a series of indispensable alt-country albums, including her widely acclaimed Car Wheels on a Gravel Road. Williams has lightened up in recent years, since she met Minnesota native and former music executive Tom Overby. The two were married onstage at Minneapolis’ First Avenue in September 2009, and Williams’ new album, released in March, is called Blessed. Now, Williams stretches the limits of her balladry to include the undiscovered territories of contentment and bliss. Williams’ misery always yielded beautiful results, but her joy is just as easy to fall in love with.
