London Calling

A concert program titled “Nostalgic Classics” sounds like something blanketed in home-fire warmth. But tonight’s Kansas City Civic Orchestra selections aren’t exactly jingle jams — unless you’re shopping for caskets come Black Friday. Sure, the relatively bouncy “London” symphony by Haydn will ease the fatalism in the room after Henry Purcell’s “Funeral Music for Queen Mary.” Until you remember that this was Papa’s last symphony. That leaves Gabriel Fauré’s chic “Pelléas et Mélisande” to really bring the kind of nostalgia that’s just a little homesick and not shivering with mortal dread. The brilliant counterprogramming starts at 7:30 p.m. in Founder’s Hall, at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral (415 West 13th Street, 816-474-8260). The concert is free. See kccivic.org for details.
