Local Chestnuts for the Fire

Going to farmers markets might seem like a warm-weather activity. But the organic bounty of local growers extends right into the cold-weather months and is available to consumers on Friday evenings through February 25 at BadSeed (1909 McGee). This week is the BadSeed Holiday Market. Owners Brooke Salvaggio and Dan Heryer provide whiskey and Shatto cream so that shoppers can enjoy a spiked cup of fair-trade, organic, micro-roasted Puddin’ Head coffee while filling bags (not the plastic kind, please) with winter squash, greens, sweet potatoes, chestnuts, free-range meats, eggs, artisan sheep’s-milk cheese, jams, jellies, baked goods and local whole-wheat flour (for home-baking projects). The market lasts from 4 to 8 p.m., but arrive before 6 to enter the raffle for a farm basket stuffed with a little treat from every vendor. See badseedfarm.com for more information.— Crystal K.
