LiveKC’s urban Backyard party starts Thursday with leisure sports, a food truck and a biergarten

LiveKC’s mission to bring life to Barney Allis Plaza this summer kicks off Thursday night with the first Backyard event.

At 5 p.m., downtown Kansas City’s most underused town square transforms into an urban Backyard with a food truck (Werner’s on Wheels), a biergarten and leisure sports. Downtown Kansas City hasn’t always been the most vibrant place after 5 p.m., with the exception of First Fridays. LiveKC’s Erik Wullschleger says it’s his group’s mission to change that.

The competitive leisure sports league is scheduled for the next six Thursdays. Though the league is full, there will be pickup games of croquet, bocce ball and badminton.

Friday, June 5, is set to be an “official preview event,” with happy hour set for 5 p.m. Look for community artwork and live music to be added to the mix. And if you don’t like what you’re seeing that night, you’ll be able to suggest changes to help change Barney Allis Plaza from that vacant place that used to host pro tennis matches in the summer to something more lively.

Look for more throughout the summer and more info on livekc.org in the future.
