Letters: “A Google Expert,” December 2, 2008

I missed Joshua Lawson’s original letter. I have no intention of responding to any letter he may write about this one, but in his latest talking about the economic crisis, he wrote, “Eerie, we seem to be in the same situation less than a century later.” Since earlier in his letter he claims he spends ample time reading about history, he should know that before FDR, the president was Hoover. He was a Republican. Both houses of Congress were controlled by Republicans when Hoover was in office and when George W. Bush was president. I am no huge student of history, but I remember a saying that those who ignore history are doomed to repeat it.

Feature: “A Miscreant’s Christmas,” December 25

I’ve been reading Midtown Miscreant’s blog from the beginning. With Justin Kendall’s cover story about him, it’s gratifying to see Mark Smith finally getting the recognition he deserves.

I have thoroughly enjoyed everything Mark has ever written. He’s gritty, he’s authentic, he respects his readers, and he doesn’t hold anything back. I call it blog noir.

Mark is a skilled storyteller who has the rare ability to draw readers in and take them places they never thought they wanted to go, but come out the other side enriched and glad to have shared the experience with him.

I think he’s among the best writers in the Midwest. I can’t think of any other blogger or columnist whom I would actually be willing to pony up a subscription for, but I would pay to read Mark Smith. He’s that good.

I enjoyed the article on Midtown Miscreant blogger Mark Smith. I’ve been reading his blog for quite a while now. His writing is real and raw, no sugarcoating. You should hire him!
