LET’S GOGH TO THE MOVIES

For permitting director Vincente Minnelli to photograph Van Goghs, an impressive roster of institutions is thanked in the opening credits of Lust For Life (1956), including “The Nelson Gallery and Atkins Museum, Kansas City,” locals may be pleased to note. As the passionate, tormented Vincent Van Gogh and his fiery contemporary Paul Gauguin, respectively, Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn deliver portrayals as sensitive and evocative as one expects from such great actors (yet still somehow as badass as one would expect from Spartacus and Auda Abu Tayi). Screening at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Public Library (707 Vermont), Lust for Life kicks off the library’s Artists on Film series, which continues with John Huston’s 1952 Moulin Rouge (July 17), Julie Taymor’s Frida (July 24) and Julian Schnabel’s Basquiat (July 31). Admission to all the Friday screenings is free, and popcorn is provided. For more information, call 785-843-3833.
Fridays, 7 p.m. Starts: July 10. Continues through July 31, 2009
