Rich in history and vitamins, Lenexa’s Spinach Fest is happening this weekend
Lenexa Spinach Festival is back this Saturday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. with food, music, and hands-on activities for the whole family.
Lenexa was anointed as the “Spinach Capital of the World” during the 1930s due to the incredible spinach crops grown in the area. You can experience the World’s Largest Spinach Salad at the festival, learn more about the rich history, or even submit your favorite spinach dish to the recipe contest.
The Spinach Recipe Contest has four categories: appetizers, salads, entrees, and desserts. Judging begins at 1:30 p.m. on the event day, and the top winner in each category will be awarded a cash prize of $100. Following the judging, attendees can sample the entries.
Some highlights of the event include crafts and pedal boat rides for the kids, cooking demos, a history walking tour, and a spinach dip showdown among local restaurants and food vendors. All festival guests can sample the entries and vote for their favorites between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Winners will be selected for the categories of Best Cold Spinach Dip and Best Hot Spinach Dip.
Food vendors include: Lenexa Historical Society, The Good Lemon Drink Co. with a specialty spinach lemonade, KC Treat truck, Brew Haha Coffeehouse with some spinach pastries, Eat Schmidt, Brain Freeze with some frozen cocktails and mocktails, and more.
Admission is free for this flavorful community event.
