Lawrence Parallax

In Brian Stuparyk’s eyes, there’s something not quite right about Lawrence. The artist takes his hunch to the next level in It Happened in Lawrence, Kansas, a silk-screen print exhibit inspired by the city and B-movies. The free show debuts in an opening reception from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Bourgeois Pig (6 East Ninth Street, Lawrence). Ten silk-screen prints of familiar Lawrence scenes make up the printmaker’s show. Through 3-D glasses, viewers can ponder Stuparyk’s question: Is Lawrence too idyllic? “It’s sort of an oasis in the middle of Kansas, but it’s kind of a fool’s paradise,” says Stuparyk, an artist-in-residence at the Lawrence Arts Center. “There’s that little bit of an undertone of something not quite right in this town, and that’s where the B-movies come in.”The show, Stuparyk’s first half of a “love letter” to the city, runs through May 31.
