Last Call
Since its April opening, a group exhibit at Grand Arts (1819 Grand, 816-421-6887) has evolved from a promising, nascent blast of cerebral fun into an intriguing anthology of environmental explorations. From the Fat of the Land: Alchemies, Ecologies, Attractions has its closing reception tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. “It’s an exhibition of eco-art practices,” says Stacy Switzer, artistic director at Grand Arts. “It discusses climate change and turns attention to artists dealing with it — the stewardship of air and land, ideas of ecology, economy, and the creative use and misuse of materials. Most of these artists take an optimistic approach.”
Micaela O’Herlihy’s short film loop “Alone in the Woods Till Death Do I Wander” is a haunting, silent fantasy. Switzer describes it as “an impressionistic documentary” that has been embellished since April with additional footage. Adam Zaretsky’s laboratory installation has conducted its intended experiment: extraction of DNA from organic samples using household equipment. The gloppy results are exhibited with the lab bench. Lynus Young exhibits elegant, colorful works of etched glass on a wall decorated with his brushed-ink drawings. Most of the 10 participating artists will be at the reception.
