Lash Canino

A family tree of Lawrence indie-rock players’ projects would be a gnarled, tangled mass, and several branches of this mutated musical map would trace back to Lash Canino. The group’s origins date to the short-lived outfit Hollic, which included singer/guitarist Wade Kelly and drummer Jason Khomsi. That band played its first show in 1996 at KU’s Hashinger Hall, the trunk of the aforementioned botanical behemoth — members of the Get Up Kids, Anniversary, Everest, Mates of State and Appleseed Cast all jammed there around that time. After serving a fruit fly’s lifetime in American Year Zero, Khomsi went on hiatus while Kelly fronted all-star ensemble Higher Burning Fire on its gorgeous lone release In Plain Song. Like HBF, Lash Canino, born in 2000, demonstrates a perfectionist streak, spending a full year practicing and crafting its set list before setting foot onstage. Unlike that infrequently seen act, this trio, with Jason’s brother Matt on bass, doesn’t contend with massive scheduling conflicts, meaning local listeners should get plenty of opportunities to become familiar with its politely experimental, space-dusted sounds.
