This year, KKFI 90.1 is changing its annual holiday auction: Rather than online, the auction will be live this year — and it will take place at Ollie’s Local on Saturday, December 12.

“I don’t feel like it fulfills our mission to put people in front of their computers more, rather than putting them in front of music and art and putting them in the same room together,” Bill Sundahl, KKFI’s special events, volunteer and underwriting coordinator, says. “And, logistically, it’s kind of a pain to put everything online, too. Which is fine, but what we really want to do is foster community.”

The holiday auction is typically one of KKFI’s largest fundraisers, Sundahl says, and he doesn’t anticipate the change in format to have a negative effect.

“Ultimately, it’s really about what we’re doing rather than how much money it makes,” he says. “Part of our job is to make money, but I think it’s gong to be more successful than the online one. The type of things that I’ve gotten donated this year focus on packages and things that build nights out in Kansas City. I’m really trying to focus on local businesses because that’s what we are.”

A few notable auction items: a wine tasting for four at Belvoir Winery in Liberty; a local vinyl package, a USB-1 turntable, tickets to a handful of Riot Room shows, a Folk Alliance International 2016 admission package, and a weekend in June at Paradise Point Resort at Table Rock Lake. There will also be a host of other ticket packages and gift cards to area businesses.

The auction is free and open to the public, but Ollie’s Local is offering a reserve-table option with dinner and drinks. Tables seat four people and cost $350 to reserve.

“The bar is going to be open just like they normally would, but they’ve set aside nine tables or so and said, ‘Hey, if you can fill those up with reservations, go on and do it,'” Sundahl says. “There’s other seating available, but the reservations come with a nice meal — Ollie’s is preparing special things that aren’t on their menu — and drinks.”

Sundahl notes that the reserve-table option is donation-oriented: “You can easily feed four people for less than $350, of course. But it’s also a way to make sure you have a place to sit all night, and we think it’s going to get pretty crowded.”

Live music will also be provided by KKFI DJs, as well as bluegrass duo the Matchsellers, singer-songwriter Jessica Paige, acoustic folk singer Ivory Black, and energetic bluegrass band Loaded Goat.
