Killa City: Travis D. Ybarra charged with killing Brian K. Smith

Jackson County prosecutors charged Travis D. Ybarra yesterday with second-degree murder and armed criminal action in the death of Brain K. Smith.

Prosecutors allege that 21-year-old Ybarra fatally shot 24-year-old Smith, who was sitting in Ybarra’s car, on September 28.

Police found Smith lying in the street around 4:11 a.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ybarra’s girlfriend later told police that Smith showed up at her home around 1 a.m. that day. Ybarra’s girlfriend told detectives that she left he residence with Smith when he received a call from Ybarra wanting his car back. Smith left Ybarra’s girlfriend to return the car.

A witness told police that she saw Ybarra yell at Smith and later shoot him while Smith was sitting in the car parked at 49th and Eastern.

Another witness also claimed that he saw Ybarra shoot Smith, who fell out of Ybarra’s car, and watched Ybarra ride away on a motorcycle.

Ybarra was arrested on October 5.

The Kansas City Star reports that Ybarra and Smith were best friends. Apparently not that good of friends.
