The charges against a 16-year-old boy who allegedly shot and killed his girlfriend have been dropped, KCTV 5 reports.
The unnamed teen shot 17-year-old Charmaine Jamison in the face and killed her. The shooting was called accidental. But Jamison’s death was still counted as a homicide, and the boy was charged with involuntary manslaughter.
A couple of weeks ago, Jamison’s family didn’t want to press charges. The family even held a joint press conference with the shooter’s parents, asking prosecutors to drop charges against the boyfriend.
That’s not the case anymore, KCTV 5 reports.
At the time of the incident, Jamison’s parents did not wish to have charges filed against the boyfriend, but on Monday they told KCTV5’s Shaun Broyls that they have had a change of heart. Jamison’s mother spoke to Broyl’s shortly after the charges were dropped on Monday and she said she is stunned.
“I just know that my daughter’s gone (and) he’s free,” Sheron Jamison said. “He knows what happened. Charmaine knows what happened and she’s gone. And God knows what happened. I’m going to leave it in God’s hands.
Update (11:15 a.m. Tuesday, September 29): The Jackson County Family Court just released a statement saying: “The evidence submitted did not provide sufficient proof of Charmaine Jamison’s death due to criminal negligence. The juvenile was released from the juvenile detention facility yesterday.”
However, juvenile officers are reviewing state and municipal weapons laws to see if they were violated, the release says. “However, no decision has made, and no decision is expected in the near future.”
